I turned off AdBlock today for the first time in months. It's bizarre to see the web with ads again.
The reason, of course, has to do with the game. I dipped my toe into Internet advertising today, setting up accounts with Google AdWords, Facebook ads, and got the ball rolling a few other places besides. Starting tomorrow, Facebook is going to mention my game to a few thousand people a day. Not a bad deal for a latte worth of cash daily.
It has me thinking that we live in an attention economy. I pay people* to look at my new creation, and if they get excited about it, then they pay me**. It feels like a strange gamble, putting it that way. But maybe it's the most fundamental one of the information economy.

*: In that someone had to foot the bill for that google search or that facebook pageview, and for this millisecond, I picked up the tab.
** In that they buy my thing.

i would say nowadays nothing goes quite well without the proper advertising.
But then again the word mouth to mouth is so powerful as well.
