hung over greetings from Memphis...
there is so much cool shit here... Stax, Sun, Hi, Rock N' Soul Museum... on and on and on...
however, it's amazing to me how isolated from racism we are in Colorado... i know it's there, but it's one of those things that isn't staring you in the face (at least if you're a middle class white man like yours truely) so you can lie to yourself and tell yourself the world is a good place and the people on it are allright.... we went to the Rock N' Soul Museum yesterday (those Smithsonian people sure can put on a nice exibit) and there was a display about the role of Memphis music in civil rights and how things are supposed to be better now then they were then (and they are) but there's still a white side of town and a black side of town and folks here still don't cross those lines (locals at least)... Brad (the guy who's wedding we're here for) told us a story about the first time he came out here and he went to dinner and asked the waitress if she'd ever been to Graceland (on my way there as soon as i finish writing this) and she took on a hushed tone and said no. Brad asked her why not. Her resonse was (i shit you not), "That's the dark part of town." Keep in mind this was only a few years ago (no more than five or six)... What the fuck.
well, enough of my prattling on... hope you are having fun in a place that is far more comfortable than here (too fucking hot, too fucking humid)...
love you kids...
