I'm getting super excited for Saturday
My roommate and I have decided to finally start hosting Couchsurfers after talking about the possibility for over a year now (since she moved in. It was one of my requirement for a roommate, that they have to be okay with the possibility of eventually hosting. So on the 2nd of this month, I got a message on CS from a guy in Argentina asking for advice on finding a host in Seattle since he saw that I wasn't listed as able to host but was fairly active in Seattle CS stuff. He had just signed up days before after being told about the site by an American girl he showed around his hometown the week before (her uncle knew him and got her in contact with him while she was in Argentina). My roommate just happened to be sitting next to me when I read the message and I turned to her asked "You wanna start hosting?" "Sure". So I wrote back saying we may be able to host him or at the very least show him around. He then gave me the girl's name because he had no references yet, so I found her on CS and wrote her asking about him. She didn't have a single bad thing to say about him and even said the day he showed her around was one of her favorite days in Argentina, and has since given him a real reference on his page.
Since he'll be in town for just over 2 weeks and plans to check out Vancouver also, we wouldn't be hosting him until his last week in town (last week of the month). He's offered to meet us first when he first arrives and allow us the opportunity to decide if we really will host him or bail if we get busy or just don't want to. We've exchanged numerous lengthy messages of small talk and planning, and he seems incredibly nice and very interesting. He flies in tomorrow and we'll be meeting him on Saturday, taking him to the Seattle Art Museum, dinner, and then to a show by local bands that I got invited to (by a band member who happened to be the waiter when I went out with 2 of my closest friends).
Our surfer is a 27 year old artist/painter and Uni professor of graphic design. He'll be in town personally delivering one of his paintings to the buyer in town. He's been in the US on business, delivering paintings and whatnot before, but I guess they've mostly involved meeting only business contacts and being hosted by business contacts or put up in hotels. Even though he's had offers of being hosted by the buyers and another business contact during this trip, he decided that he wanted to interact more with non-business contacts during this trip so he was going to do hostels this time (still is). But then when the US girl told him about CS, he thought it would be perfect also.
After exchanging so many messages with him and getting to know him a bit, I'm really excited to meet him and talk to him about his art. I'm also going to try my darndest not to make a fool of myself around him because he's incredibly handsome. He's Italian (though born and raised in Argentina) and an artist... need I say more? I have a serious soft spot for artists, especially Italian artists... and this all stems from being in 6th or 7th grade and having a teeny tiny crush on my sister's bf (now-husband) who is an artist and is half-Italian. I think I have sister envy. I even joked that I'd go find my own Italian artist to marry when I went to Italy last year. I'll behave and keep my hands to myself, I promise
