I have to write a Maid-of-Honor speech for a wedding between 2 friends who are marrying purely for benefits on Friday. I love my friends. What's even better... I egged this on too!
I had lunch with them 2 weekends ago and they mentioned that they had been joking about it because she needs the medical benefits his new job would give and he can get the tax break. The whole lunch, I was half-jokingly, half-seriously telling them it's a great idea. There were plenty of jokes made about reactions by friends and family. By the end of lunch it was decided, but it still felt like a joke. They started calling people after lunch and the reactions were fantastic. But still, when I called her up a few days later and asked "how's the wedding planning going?", I wasn't sure it was really going to happen. When she said "we're getting the marriage license notarized and we're getting married at the court house the Friday after next" I was a tiny bit surprised, cause they're really going through with this. The Best Man doesn't know the real reason behind why they're getting married Oh, and did I mention... the bride lives with her boyfriend (her fiance until recently, cause he kinda messed up the wedding bit, so they're not getting married this year), and the groom is their roommate? God do I love my friends!
Now I just have to figure out what to say in my speech...
