Some of my friends were telling from a sort of game they discovered and they really liked. Its name is minecraft. It's a 3D game written completly in Java by a type calling himself Notch.
There are two modes. The older one is a buildermode. You just have a surface on which you can build things. That for you got different blocks. They all have the same size (1m^3) but different colors and textures.
One of the most amazing examples what can be done with them is this video:
Since some time there now is a second mode. All things there are also built with these blocks. But it's more like a common game. You start with nothing but your hands and can start as lumberjack to get some wood by which you can then make better tools. You will also find monsters to fight and a lot of different materials. In this mode there are also other blocks like stairs and rails.
As I'm not a friend of closed software and as I almost never play any games they had a really hard time trying to convince me to buy it. But when a friend visited me last weekend and we played it for some hours I was really amazed and so I bought it (about 13$ is really not much!).
I have to say that I really love it and that I'm now spending a looooooooot of time playing it and building thins
