My new N900
A few days ago I got my new N900. It really is a great phone! It's big and heavy, but it offers a lot of great features.
One of the greatest things is it's browser. It loads pages very quickly and shows them exactly the way they are shown on a desktop-computer (more specific: in Firefox, as the Browser of the N900 actually is Firefox). It also loads flash. It's possible to watch Youtube videos withou lagging, if no other applications are opened.
But the flash also brings disadvantages. All the flash-banners are back and it takes bandwith and data from the contract. I found an extension that does block flash and other Apps, but it does so via CSS, so the content is loaded anyway. However there also is Opera Mobile for the N900, so I can use Opera when I'm not on Wifi.
The FF browser does even work with Google Wave: GREAT!
The N900 comes with an x-terminal preinstalled, what's a really great feature! It's possible to sync contacts, todos and the callendar via Exchange. A howto for doint this with gmail can be found here: link. I got some problems with the birtday. On the N900 they are all moved by one day, so I'll alway be l8 .
The keyboard is not so bad as you hear in many reviews. It would indeed be great to get 4 rows of keys, but it works like that. The space-button on the left doesn't disturb that much. It is definitely an improvement over a virtual onscreen-keyboard (mostly when U do coding in the great ported Vi-editor, or when U control ur home-pc via ssh).
The player didn't want to play most of my clips. But after installing the additional Codecs and the mplayer, it does work (also in the "normal" player). The Bluetooth-link to my headset is not as stable as on my old Touch Diamond (shame on me for once buying an WinMo-device!), but it does work and it's much easier to connect them.
The display is crisp and very bright. It's a great feeling to watch videos on it. Also the stereo-speakers make good-quality sound.
The Multitasking is very intuitive and the phone mostly reacts very quickly and loads things very fast.
After all it's a great phone. But it is a Geek-phone. There are some things that I can imagine the normal user would not like todo (installing a package for unloading the wlan-modul from the kernel when wlan is not used. Adding extras-repository to the package manager...). But for everyone who loves Linux and likes to play around with a great device - definitely buy it!
