i've spent a lot of time this evening thinking about life, my role in it, what i'm currently doing, and things that need to change. very difficult, and very necessary thoughts.

upon recommendation from a good friend, i started reading a really good book entitled "getting things done: the art of stress-free productivity", by david allen. the author's major point is that by getting every...

i had one of those moments last night where the right number of serendipitous events happened, the planets aligned, and life just kind of went *click*. as a result, i know basically have some idea of what i'll be doing the next few years.

first, a little back story.

when i graduated and took my current job at badbrain, i really had no idea what...

i just got off the phone with my grandfather. he and my grandmother are at the mayo clinic in rochester, where he will have surgery tomorrow to remove two more tumorous portions of his lungs.

he didn't say much, which for my grandfather is actually saying a lot. if you know my grandpa gerald, you know that he could start a conversation with a brick...

I don't want this to sound like the standard allaying of fears but the Mayo Clinic is possibly the best place to be if your sick. I hope everything works out for the best.

observations i have made about post-college life and sharing a house with 4 roommates, vol. 2

9. your roommates leaving a mess in the kitchen is perfectly acceptible. you leaving a mess in the kitchen is a national crisis that needs to be rectified immediately.
10. the tragedy of the commons is in full effect when pertaining to the living room, dining area, kitchen, and...

it must be fall. my feet are cold more often than not and i feel like the life has been sapped out of me. time to get out the warm socks and take the air conditioner out of the window.

i've decided that tuesdays just aren't my day. other than my workout this morning, i really don't have anything productive to show for myself all...

i've been working really hard the last couple of weeks. there are several web development projects on my plate, and last night i was at a client's office until midnight trying to diagnose a server problem. it's hard, demanding work, but at the same time there's a great deal of satisfaction knowing that you are responsible for helping a business to succeed, or in helping...

Sounds good, not many people can claim they feel fulfilled and satisfied by their job, of course you better be knocking on as much wood as you can find b/c I think you just jinxed yourself biggrin

observations i have made about post-college life and sharing a house with 4 roommates, vol. 1.

1. single women (with very few exceptions) are slobs.
2. never underestimate the ability of a straw hat to attract the opposite sex at a drinking establishment.
3. telling yourself you'll do a household chore and actually doing that chore are two very different things.
4. the quickest way...

the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.

yeah, i know. i'm lame. i'm really lame. sue me.

i'm sitting at home, browsing sg on a craptastic DSL connection while half paying attention to the daily show. i've got a nasty head cold/sinus headache and i'm kinda nauseous. what better a time than now to wax philosophical about my life?

lately, i've felt......

I just got back from vacation, and I've been very much stir-crazy. I cleaned my desk today, and I felt like Parker Posey (sp?), in Party Girl, learning about about Camus's Sysisphus (sp?), wanting to up-end the whole deal, set it afire, or something.

Anyway, the last piece of mail I open had a credit card small-print side-note telling me they'd be doubling my APR unless I write them in time. They point out that telephoning will not be sufficient.

About then it occurs to me that nothing clarifies the senses quite so much as danger and challenge. People are fond of saying that nothing sharpens the wits like hunger, yet I'm certain that malnourishment offsets those gains quite quickly.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I prefer a good, hard depressive bout or a heated argument to a desk full of mail most any day, yet battles these days seem to be fought and lost on desks cluttered and clean, and in the food-store, of course. The best we can do is fight a good fight, right?

I pulled a decent crop of beets and learned to make sake this week. It's the little things, right?

yikes. you know it's hot when the air conditioner trips the circuit breaker.

i've been working a 6-week stint at a summer computer camp in chicago (beginning of the fourth week now) and today was the first truly hot day. the heat index was 106 degrees today, and we actually kept the kids inside for fear of them getting heat stroke or passing out on...

you know how sometimes, after a big change/transition, things will go well for a while and then all of a sudden you get hit by this big wave of emotion?

well, i graduated and started work. i've been living in this house for about a week now, and i just now got hit by a wave of nostalgia. of longing to be in a dorm...

Yeah. That one lasted a while for me. I still go through it in spells.

My consolation is that I get a hell of a lot more done living away from the bustle. A little bit at a time I'm reading books that used to terrify me. I can spend a day gardening, at first out of boredom but at the end full of inspiration.

But you can see that this might be how wars start ("lets all go blow shit up") and why barflies/alcoholism are so established (at the bar there's always at least a bartender for company).

If I do enough in the day to be tired by the end then the nights aren't bad. Friends within biking distance still never hurts...

Good luck.
P.S. Are heritage flakes anything like grapenut flakes? I'd kill for some grapenut flakes just now. With ricemilk, of course smile
