I love Lee Friedlander's photography. I like Hockney because his work isn't a single snapshot, and we don't experience life in snapshots. Friedlander however, has the ability to capture a moment in time with all of its poignancy, peculiarity and irony.
Back in 1985, Playboy published some black and white photos of Madonna naked. This shortly after her second album was released, and seeing her naked was a big deal. Both Playboy and Penthouse raced to the newsstands with naked pictures of her. I remember buying both issues and mulling over them both with my record store coworkers. We agreed that Penthouse photos showed more skin, but the Playboy photos were just better photos.
I recently learned that the Playboy photos were ones that she shot with Friedlander. Here's the Material Girl, back when she was infinitely fuckable:
