I'm also very concerned as to how they determine these things. This always negatively affects women of colour and queer/trans women the most.

Yeah, nevermind that it's 2016 and things are different, that the public you'll be interacting with is used to facial piercings and non-natural hair colours. I get the need to look professional at work, but unless you're dealing with high level business clients it should be your attitude that matters and not little nit-picks about your appearance.
