Howdy, y'all. I'm back from Texas. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. In fact, I didn't even feel like I was in Texas. It felt a lot like Sacramento, Very few of the people we met/hung out with had that Texas drawl, and I didn't see any more big trucks or cowboy hats than I'm used to. We had no trouble finding vegetarian food, and I saw as many democrat bumper stickers as republican ones.
My half-sister-in-law's family was very cool, and we had fun hanging with my brother- and sister-in-law and our adorable nephew. It was especially interesting to meet (and stay with) my father-in-law's ex-wife.
The River Walk in San Antonio is very cool. We also went to the Alamo, but then decided it was too hot to wait around for a tour, so we went home. Although it was hot (90s), it wasn't scorching like when I was in Phoenix the day Jerry Garcia died (August '95).
So, all in all, I'd recommend a visit to San Antonio. Lots of Hispanic culture, not too many rednecks.
