I just got some sad news.
My Great Aunt Bess just died the other night.
Ok, she wasn't really related to me, she was my cousin Adam's Great Aunt, but she came to a lot of my birthday parties and we always saw each other at family get togethers. We were expecting it in some way as a few Thanksgivings ago we had a scare where she collapsed during dinner.
She was a big woman, and she grew up in the lap of luxury, servants and all. Her life became more meager after she moved to the SF Bay Area. She was practically inseperable with her sister, and they were the big ladies who always wanted the strong hugs.
I do have a few stories I'd like to share, cause she was definitely a character.
Some of my younger cousins were at Thanksgiving and apparently they had been playing poker lately. Texas Hold 'Em, specifically. So they wanted to see if any of the older people would play and Bess volunteered. She got over to the poker table and schooled every one of them. That was great.
Also, at the dinner table, she was wearing this jeweled necklace with her initials on it, and I was like, "Aunt Bess, you got some bling on!"
Everybody laughed, and then she pulled out her hand to show off this huge pinky ring, and said "no, this is some bling"
She had just come back from a long trip to Israel and she passed in her sleep from what I hear. Thanks for stopping by this sentimental journal entry and listening to me talk about her.
