I'm sending a message to the SG staff to ask about fixing up the site. I'm not dong a redesign, just improving the current one and the code behind it.
My major goals, so far:
*Correct handling of special characters, particularly backslashes
*Improve the damn text entry stuff so it removes HTML the first go-around or not at all, etc.
-Support more markup
-Possibly add a structured text (wiki-stlye markup)
*Posibly incorportae some HTML filter so you can use HTML and not compromise the site
*Change id= props to class= on the front page (a minor error, brings it back into XHTML compliance)
*Add threading (if you reply to someone you'll vreate a thread. This should encourage conversations)
*Add some sort of comment notification (e-mails? recent comments page?)
*Clean up the comment/discussion interface (put edit and reply in consistently?)
Yes, I admit that I'm heavily influenced by LiveJournal and stuff. Any thoughts about this? Are there other things that bug you? Are my ideas stupid? etc.
Should I post this to a more public place (like the boards or a group or something)?

The idea of comment notification is basically to let you know whenever someone replies to a post or comment of yours. This isn't such a big deal with journal entries (there's the comment counter), but as it stands it's hard to keep track of topics in the groups and forums.
About the interface stuff ... when you want to edit a journal entry, you have to go to the update page. But if you want to edit a comment, it's right there in the upper right hand corner. I reply link is only available in the forums and groups. This stuff should be consistent.
