MUSIC REVIEW BY ASTROKREEP23
This Week, Avril Lavigne:
Avril Lavigne is pretty hot right now. Some have said that she is heralding in a new age of Pop Music. Some say shes the first in a new line of "bad girls." Some say shes about about as bad as the Fonze. I didn't know much about Avril to tell you the truth. I heard her song on the radio, Complicated, it was catchy, a little pop for my tastes but I still liked it. Then my friend bought the album, much to the chagrine of his girlfriend, and said it rocked and people shouldn't judge this girl so harshly. I, not having been aware people were judging her, went out aquired to her album to give it a try. I listened, not bad, there were at least four good songs anyways, which was impressive to me in this day and age of albums with one good song that get you to buy it only to discover that the rest is crap. I listened some more and various songs got stuck in my head and I didn't mind. At this point is important to note that I had never even seen a picture of this girl, how can that be you ask? It's really quite simple, I HATE MTV. I won't watch it. 'Nuff said. Well after listening to this album my curiosity was aroused so I downloaded the complicated music video and watched it. Ca Ching! Hold the phone. Nobody said anything about this girl being the cutest thing to come along since, well, ever! Now I was hooked. I even, *gasp*, watched an interview with her on MTV's TRL. She seemed to have a kinda, "I'm a cute bad girl don't mess with me act going." The crowd cheered when she insinuated that she didn't like Britney Spears. Personally I think "bad" girls don't insinuate. Anyways after that I became aware that various people loved and hated her. The True Skaters and Punks out there hate hate HATE her because shes not really "hardcore." Everyone else seems to like her though. Here is my opinion. If Avril wan't to pretend she's a "bad girl" thats fine by me. I for one am enthused that we have a pop star who for once writes her owns songs, plays an instrument, wears clothes, and who doesn't whore her ass around like so many others. I think she is a far better role model for today's youth and if some has to boot out the Britneys and Boy Bands I'm glad its her. I don't care too much about the "image" of people who perform my music. I'm just in it for the good tunes and melodies. You think John Lennon was an upstanding guy? Don't make me laugh. But god damn if his music didn't inspire a generation. I for one am not sure how you can actually hate this girl. How can you hate that cute pouty face staring back at you in the "Complicated" video. Oh it makes me weak in the knees. I am sure I'll take shit for this review but consider this: there will always be Pop Music. It can either be people like Avril or it can be plastic pretty boys like N'sync. I think the choice is pretty clear.
