last night, i went to the bar to say farewell to my friend derek, who is moving away from edmonton to "chase his dreams" in calgary. there i ran into melissa who is also moving, to long beach, california. it was a jolly bunch--everyone was giddy about the warm weather and drinking beer on the patio upstairs. at one point i glanced at melissa and thought, "ah, that's the face of someone whose life is on the verge of thrilling changes!" maybe i was just drunk, or maybe i was projecting my own desires to break away from this place...but it really seemed like she was glowing with energy and good vibes. in fact, with all the well-wishing and hugging going on, the whole bar took on a positively radiant feeling. there's nothing sweeter than the affection at a going-away party, especially when the person leaving is well-loved.
i was having a major case of warm fuzzies. it wasn't until i went to the bathroom and saw a message written on the wall that i remembered these people were leaving their friends and boyfriends/girlfriends behind for a new life...exciting, yeah, but potentially lonely at first. in neat handwriting, on the cubicle wall, someone had written, "i love you, and so g'bye dear."

catdad:
You have a knack for telling great little stories about your experiences. Your style reads like bits and pieces of something bigger, like a novel. Thanks for sharing them. Hopefully, you do a lot of writing.
