so, valentine's day is coming up. someone i know calls it "singles awareness day," which was funny...but then she also mentioned that some people are having an anti-valentine party, which was less funny and just sadly earnest and pretentious. yeah sure, let's get the gang together and wear all black and give out "ironic" valentine cards. dude, that was cool back in HIGH SCHOOL.
singles who loathe valentine's day are just as annoying as the couples who are totally precious about it and take it super seriouslyyou know, those people who get anxious about having the right flowers and the perfect dinner reservation. i mean, who cares?? these people probably cry every time they have sex.
i guess i just don't think there's any need to get stressed about it either way.
ok, now that i've alienated 90% of the readers here, i think the solution for feeling the love on valentine's day is this: valentine brunch for your best friendscouples, singles, whoever. a few years ago, we had one at pradeep's house and made pancakes and eggs and fruit salad.
everyone had brought a mystery valentine gift (just something fun from home that they didn't want anymore) and we passed them around. sue's mystery gift happened to come from cindy, and it was a nice black-and-white photo of a guitarist performing at caf mosaics. when sue opened it, she just stared.
"hey, i think i dated this guy," said sue.
she had just gotten a picture of her ex for valentine's day. well, i never said my solution was perfect.
