Rotten Thursday - The Abridged Version
Woke up at 3 am, after 3 1/2 hours' sleep.
Left the house at 4 am.
Proceeded to Houston V.A. Hospital for hunny's pre-op appt.
It's raining and cold and traffic is a bitch as usual.
After much waiting, several rounds of 'go here/go there', finished up around noon.
Make the drive BACK home (about 2 1/2 hours including pit stops & Waffle House (yummy).
Fifteen minutes after arriving, exhausted, I realize that one of my cats is very wrong. She's the size of a small country, whereas yesterday only the size of a large city.
Drive to the damned veterinarian.
He says 'She has worms. Give her this.'
I say 'No, she doesn't have worms, and besides, worms don't make cats burp like drunken sailors.' Which is what she was doing, among other things.
He says 'She'll be fine, take her on home.'
I say 'Absolutely not. There's something wrong with this cat. Fix it. Now.
Sooo...four hours later we find out that her stomach and intestines are distended to three times their normal size - gastroenteritis (lots and lots of gas that won't go away the normal way).
He never even admitted that he was wrong, the punk.
Now - back to this VA thing, because this was really the part that messed me up....
While we're waiting in one of the endless hallways, I see a staff member walking with a patient. She released her grip on this probably 55 year-old man and said 'Have a nice day Mr. ____'. He was around 100 feet from the door to the waiting room. This poor man proceeds to TRY and make it to the door - faltering, staggering, almost falling down. By now I can't take it anymore and go and grab the man by the arm and escort him to the waiting room. I asked the desk attendant to call a transport van for him. NOW - one of the doctors pulls me aside and asks if I am 'with that man'.
I said 'No, I am not. Why?'
Her - 'Well, I just want you to know that he is HIGH ON DRUGS AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE NOT ESCORTING HIM OUT.'
Me - 'I don't give a good goddamn whether he's high, blind, crazy, or just sick. If I see someone about to fall, I'm gonna help them.'
Her - 'Well, he's high on drugs.'
Me - 'Yes, you told me that already. What's your point? Are you not far enough along in your medical training to understand that drug addiction is a DISEASE, just like anything else?'
Her - ".......'
Me: 'Or do you just not have enough human compassion to give a shit?'
She still had no response, literally standing and staring at me like I had just materialized from out of nowhere. So I walked away. And everything went right back to normal - for them.
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!??
If you see someone in need - HELP them. Who gives a fuck fuckety-fuck WHY they're in need?
Humanity is in big troubls.
