Had a small breakthrough today with a gallery I've been after. It has a very common hierarchy:
#1 owner who is unreachable,
#2 owner's right hand person who is aloof unless he knows your name, then is a bit fake and not really easy to know if you are being talked to or talked down to
#3 weekend and evening employee who gets all the shit work, loves art but nobody listens to them (and probably not very respected by the other employees.
I finally got to meet the owner. Very nice person. Difficult to reach because probably everyone wants to talk directly to the person at the top of the pyramid. I was told that my photos were great and should bring them back in when the suite is finished so we can figure out which ones would be most likely to appeal to the gallery's client list (not a promise, but much better than "yea, sure, let's see it when it's done" type of vaguery. Thinking in terms of sales is at least a step in the right direction and far better than the generic "nice")
Flying back east tomorrow super early morning so I can have a few days to get the studio ready before classes start on Monday. I already know we have a few good models lined up for this semester. Hopefully the printmaking class goes too. Need just three more students to sign up and it's a go.
Spoke to two different curators last week who were anxious to include my work in their group shows. One is at the end of the summer, and the other is late spring (maybe early summer, not quite sure yet).
I was asked to do a weekend workshop this spring. It had not really ever crossed my mind, but I think it could be fun because it is such a focused way to teach (and learn). Thinking about it more, I'd rather have two intense long days of teaching/working/learning than stretch it out a couple hours at a time over the course of a couple of months. I might have to find a way to put a few of these together so I can continue teaching this summer in a way that allows time for my own work/research.
That's it for now.
I hope everyone here in SG-land is happy healthy and having some fun.
