This is almost over.
I had some of the strangest and most unsettling dreams of my life a couple of days ago. The core thread of dream narrative took place in a warehouse that specialized in selling whole, skinned animals for food. All of the animals were wrapped in some bizzare cross between plastic and wax paper...that is, translucent like wax paper, but pliable and shape-conforming like plastic. I was purchasing an entire cow--for $126 at weight. The cow, however, was still alive and subtly writhing under the plastic/wax cover. I realized that all animals were skinned but alive, requiring the purchaser to slaughter at home. Now, I have killed animals before, but in the more traditional hunter / prey setting, not in this weird factory world of the dream. I don't actually purchase beef for food in my waking life. In the dream I convinced the salesperson that I really just wanted a bit of lamb. He handed me a whole, wrapped lamb that was quivering and bleating in low tones under the covering...skinned but alive.
