Vegetarianism.
I'm at my boyfriends mothers house for the weekend, as I am most weekends and for dinner she announces she's going to make a lentil soup. I get rather happy, as I like lentils and a lentil soup is a vegetarians dream.
Well, its my dream, anyways.
So she tells me she normally puts ham or pork in it or whatever but politely tells me she will leave it out this time so ishe will make it completely vegetarian for me. Woohoo, right? No.
So she makes this soup from scratch, and when she's done, she brings it out to me (he's a fussy eater and won't eat much of anything). I glance down at it and idly ask (as I'm a cook as well) what she used as a soup base.
She goes on about flour and oil and then tells me she put chicken soup base in it.
Chicken is not a vegetable.
I didn't know what to say. My boyfriend pointed this out to her, she snatched it back, dumped it down the drain, marched upstairs and slammed her bedroom door.
I feel horrible and I don't even know why. She knows I'm a vegetarian. But I feel bad that I couldn't eat her soup. It reallty did look good. I think I hurt her feelings and I feel really bad about it. She's not very approachable when it comes to these things so I don't know what to do.
Arg.

You didn't do anything wrong. I think she overreacted. Perhaps she should have asked you about the recipe first.
