Lunch with the boy and the little one today. I think some of the pressure is off--kid gave me the eyebrow raise that his daddy's taught him to do to "flirt with girls" when I said goodbye. Because I know that if he didn't like me, that'd be The End.
Also been informed that the last girl he dated didn't meet the kid until they'd been dating for a year. Of course, she was kind of a lunatic, so that says something, but still, I'm flattered.
On the flip side, watching my single-mama friend deal with guys hurts. I think, with few exceptions, that a single dad probably has an easier time dating than a single mom--most women are a bit more willing to deal with a child. Though there are definite exceptions, and until recently I was one. Anyway, it just sucks that this girl's dating pool consists largely of guys who are totally unwilling to deal with the way her life is. I guess it's a good way to weed out the losers, but still.
My friend Mike is home from Iraq! Some people might not think New Jersey is much of an improvement, but I was thrilled to hear from him. He survived that bullshit war intact and he doesn't have to go back anytime in the near future. Hopefully ever. But he's the career-military type. Guy who was in ROTC all through school, went to college on an ROTC scholarship, graduated in 2002, and instead of officer training, went to Ranger school to be in active combat. Right before this I'd-call-it-a-farce-but-it-just-ain't-funny war started. Back when good guys like him still thought it was about defending this country and the people they loved.
Between Mike and Steve, whose father died on 9/11, I am starting to have even more serious emotional reactions to what goes on in this fucked-up mess we call a country.
Some days I feel like a shallow bitch for worrying about my waistline or a pimple when there's so much else wrong with this world.

I'm glad you aren't letting the kid issue scare you away. He sounds like a real winner (the dad, I mean).
