you want to know what pain is, eh?
the conversation between two people who have absolutely nothing in common but desperately want to hook up with each other.
today i had the displeasure of sitting next to one of these conversations for far too long. he was one of those slightly foreign, slightly jocky guys who is trying to be a bohemian intellectual, she was one of those geeky scrawny girls with glasses and long unkempt hair that have become so chic lately.
(i was going to make those descriptions link to member profiles as examples, but i realized that would be completely tasteless.)
her entire life is enveloped by the nonprofit organization she works for, helping the unemployed. it gives her life meaning. she was rich growing up and resented it. her mom's favorite restaurant was in the ghetto, so she knows what it is like, though.
he was trying his damndest to even understand and identify what she was talking about. she was the female, and she cared about something, so she led the conversation. he would occasionally throw in a "is that where _____ happened? that was cool."
"no, it isn't."
neither of them had anything to say that the other gave a shit about, but they kept talking. they wouldn't stop. it was like watching two yaks ram their heads against each other repeatedly, hoping they might slip and accidentally kiss.
people need to learn that it's okay to think someone's attractive and stupid, and it's still okay to want them sweating all over you.
