As per usual, I've been going new music bonkers.
Maybe I missed the boat on Kanye West. At the very least, I underestimated the very serious awesomeness of Heard 'Em Say feat. Adam Levine (who has a beautiful voice, but too often sings appalling lyrics). And West samples Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up and Gil Scott-Heron's Home Is Where The Hatred Is so that gives him big points. Maybe - and it seems this is the case - Late Registration actually is that awesome.
If only hip-hop album skits were banned. Ghostface Killah's Fishscale would be twice as good. The Fugees' The Score would be even better. Only Handsome Boy Modeling School can justify having skits, and even they get kind of annoying after a while. Skits and answering machine messages: ban them all.
I got all of Talk Talk's albums at TheFuckOffKid's suggestion - very good. I love their sound. I wish I was in a non-ironic early 80s pop group. Duran Duran, Cutting Crew, Talk Talk, Gang Of Four, Simple Minds, Echo & The Bunnymen; what a great aesthetic they all had, both visually and sonically.
BeckyJane got me into Emiliana Torrini, an Icelandic songstress who isn't Bjrk. Her 2005 album Fisherman's Woman - apparently inspired by the death of her boyfriend - is so beautiful. Acoustic, lovely.
I've also been listening to lots of Randy Newman and Warren Zevon. 70s based singer-songwriters: is there anything they can't do? (Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, etc. all think there isn't).
What have you been listening to lately?
Other things I've been doing:
- Getting very frustrated by technology. Things that have stopped working this week: my iPod, my van, my Mail program, the digital camera Alex and I borrowed. How much they annoyed me: too much.
- Drinking and having fun. Both last night and last Friday were kind of huge ones, predictably. Fun.
- Working on ideas for little videos and the Bondi FM radio show. Which has been going either good or bad, depending on when you ask me.
