I've been on this rant for years too.
My mother has had a kennel (white german shepards) since before I was even born, so I've been around a "good" breeder.
Through her I know all about puppy mills and pet shop puppies, and it kills me.
If it makes you feel any better at all, there are many people who are there with ya, and who try to explain to everyone they know why it is wrong.

My mother was at the mall with me recently and we ducked into Deb (sometimes they have good jeans!) and they had half of the fucking store crammed full of hideous prom dresses. There was one that was made mostly of crinoline, mesh-y type stuff in seafoam and blue. My mother said "EEEWWW! It looks like Ariel grew up and wants to go to the prom!"

Some lady shopping for prom dresses with her daughter overheard and could not stop laughing.
