Existential philosophy, eh? I'll look into that. Most of my problems have stemmed from my phobias, and the subsequent anxiety and depression as a result of the aforementioned phobias. But I'm honestly open to looking into any avenues that seem like it might present beneficial information, or in the case of your suggestion, philosophical reflection and study.

We're friends but we're not. Like we don't hang out, we don't ever really talk. But this town is surprisingly small. And often we run into each other. I guess we're more friendly than friends. And we have mutual friends so it's hard to really get away from her. I'd have to stop using social sites. And I'm not about to give those up

Echoes many of my own thoughts. Though, part of me can't help feeling like expatriation is a form of abandonment, in comparison to "doing something about it". Not that I have a fucking clue how to do that effectively.

Then, the next question is where to expatriate to. There aren't many nations that are sufficiently better as to inspire glee at the thought of moving there... particularly if you limit yourself to English-speaking nations (though I know extremely little about South Africa). There's also the problem that many excellent countries won't simply let you move there... you have to have a reason to move there (the most reliable is usually marriage; having a stable job lined up for you is usually the next-best).

We very nearly pursued a move to Japan, but it turned out not to make great financial sense at this time. Anyway, it suffers some severe problems in comparison to the States. The general lack of religion is certainly a plus, but the biggest thing that worries me about the country is their justice system - it's guilty until proven innocent, there's no jury, and if you get as far as a trial, well, congratulations, you're guilty (99.7% of trials result in conviction).

There's no such thing as a perfect nation, of course, but so far the ones I think I might be most interested in, would be Sweden or Norway. They're usually high on the Human Development Index (Norway was #1 last couple years), and they're pretty low on religious belief. Doesn't hurt that I have friends in Stockholm. From what I hear from a Swedish expatriate, though, there's plenty of Big Government, so I dunno.
