I try to like different kinds of music, I really do, but sometimes there are obstacles that just totally deny my appreciation.
What's getting me nowadays are the lyrics of some metal/hardcore bands. Today, while running errands and listening to Avenged Sevenfold, I couldn't help but smirk at how stupid some of the lyrics come out. Case in point:
"Raise your head and taste the cooouuur-rage, Fall from grace, unholy night. I've come here to kill you, won't leave until you've died."
The first part of the chorus as huge potential with the instruments and build-up, but the lyrics just lack something to be desired. I think it's a common theme on that record.
I kind of like what Mastodon has going on for themselves. I had not heard of them until I became a member here and the boards were chalk full of "Leviathan" love for 2004's best record. Then I read that the drummer is just fucking amazing, which is true. The concept album of "Leviathan" is respectable, if not too ambitious. Can anyone really pen lyrics to make "Moby Dick" hardcore? These boys tried.
"I think that someone is trying to kill me
Infecting my blood and destroying my mind
No man of the flesh could ever stop me
The fight for this fish is a fight to the death
White whale - holy grail
What remorseless emperor commands me
I no longer govern my soul
I am completely immersed in darkness
As I turn my body away from the sun
White whale - holy grail
Split your lungs with blood and thunder
When you see the white whale
Break your backs and crack your oars men
If you wish to prevail
This ivory leg is what propels me
Harpoons thrust in the sky
Aim directly for his crooked brow
And look him straight in the eye
White whale - holy grail"
Concept albums are extremely ambitious and hardly ever done correctly and receive critical acclaim. Bowie's "Low" is pretty amazing, but I think most dogged him for it...and his coke addiction. The recent "metal/hardcore/shoegaze" band I really dig is Isis. "Panopticon" is just damn amazing and the concept based on Foucalt's impressions of Jeremy Bentham's ideas is actually quite cerebral. Too bad none of the record stores near me carry such things.
