On Saturday we went to a Romanian Orthodox baptism, at the tiny St Nicholas Orthodox Church in Brixton. I was fascinated by the heavy ritualistic aspect to the whole thing - naked babe, heady incense, chanting priest & all. Apparently I was Christened in the Methodist Church on Christmas Day 1974, when I was a little over 4 month's old. Lee, my husband, was never Christened or baptised. I consequently grew up with 2 godmothers & 1 godfather, whilst my brother had 2 godfathers & 1 godmother. Lee & his siblings grew up with none.
Now although I consider myself Agnostic, & Lee considers himself Atheist, I would still like our kids (when we have them one day!) to grow up safe in the knowledge that they have guardians - special people nominated by us - who have promised to take care of them should anything happen to their mom & dad. Without going the whole religious route (traditional Christening / baptism ceremony), I'm interested to know what alternatives we have? Any advice would be most welcome.
