On Monday evening we arrived back from our 2-week stint in "Durbs by the sea" - my old stomping ground - where we over-indulged in a lot of eating, drinking & shopping, with some glorious sleeping in & reading inbetween. A few days before we were due to return home, I had a MAJOR fall-out with my father (14 years overdue, actually) over all the psychological abuse he has inflicted on me for as long as I can remember. Although my mother was not directly involved this time (she & I confronted all our demons in 2004), she didn't exactly help the situation either, so I probably won't be speaking to either of them anytime in the foreseeable future. Luckily Lee's folks could put us up for the remainder of our stay. They've recently embarked on a new business venture, running a self-catering flat on the ground level of their home. If any of you Joburgers or Capetonians need a cheap, clean & conveniently situated place to stay next time you're visiting Durbs, gimme a yell & I'll forward their contact details to you.

One afternoon whilst driving around the Point area, checking out all the amazing new development going on, we stumbled upon a seriously dilapidated Addington Children's Hospital. In KZN, all buildings over 60 years of age are protected in terms of the KwaZulu-Natal Heritage Act. Unfortunately not even the Architectural Heritage Committee, whose aim it is to protect buildings & areas of architectural importance, have been able to save this old lady. Apparently it is soon to be demolished to make way for a new block of luxury apartments, which I find terribly sad. I have always felt a kinship towards all of Addington's buildings, as unattractive or neglected as they may be, as this is where I was born & given up for adoption in 1974...
Anyways, back to the present. Tomorrow night we're having Julian & Egina + Tarryn round for a braai (BBQ). Next Friday night we're on the guestlist for a big alternative party going down in Benmore, Sandton. For more info, check out the Events page in the SGZA group journal. Speaking of which, I'm very chuffed to see we've accumulated no less than 44 South African members so far! Not bad for a country barely bigger than a smidgen at the tip of the African continent
