Phew, this has been quite a hectic week!
On Wednesday after work, Lee & I went round to my new business partners' house in Parkhurst - for Lee to meet them both, & for us to discuss the budget. The meeting had been postponed from the week before due to Paul (one of the partners) being pulled over by the cops for jumping a red light & landing up in Hillbrow Police Station for the night
Now for those of you who don't yet know, Hillbrow is South Africa's most densely populated & notoriously dangerous suburb, an area of dozens of high-rise blocks on the ridge above Johannesburg's old CBD. Many landlords have completely lost interest in or actually abandoned their buildings & allowed them to become totally run-down & grossly over-crowded. It is estimated that at least half of Hillbrow's residents are foreigners, many of them illegal immigrants (Zimbabweans, Nigerians & Mozambicans), most of them plying their trade as drug lords, dealers, pimps, & sex workers. HIV / AIDS is rife.
Anyway, Hillbrow Police Station is NOT the kind of place you wanna share a jail cell, even for a little while!!!!! 24 hours & R6k later (fine & bail paid), Paul was out - both shaken AND stirred, poor guy. Am sure he'll think twice about jumping a red light again - especially in that area!!
The budget meeting went well, & it looks like - if all goes according to plan - we should be able to start trading early in the new year. I am having another meeting with Shane (the other partner) on Monday or Tuesday evening next week, to discuss the forecast & finalise the budget.
After that, I took Lee to a nice cosy Thai restaurant for dinner - to say thanks for all his support. Without him, forging ahead with this venture would simply not be possible. Basically, he is going to have to carry me financially for the next few months, until the agency is firmly on its feet & I start making some money. Although on a monthly basis, I will be working for commission only, as a shareholder I hope to score big in the long run...
Today I got to work to find a massive bunch of flowers on my desk - from my boss & all of my colleagues to wish me well with my future endeavours. Sweet, huh?!
At 1pm, the entire division is heading off to our new premises next door for a Mexican-themed end-of-year braai (BBQ). I hope that they don't expect me to say a speech, & I hope I don't cry
