Last night after work, Azzura, Cindy (a colleague of ours) & I went along to Glamour Lounge in Hurlingham Manor, to revel in their 1st birthday celebrations (demonstrations, mini-lectures, giveaways, etc). I love it when a new business is successful. Makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside - especially when I KNOW how much blood, sweat & tears went into getting it where it is today.
Anyway, it was also one of the places I referred Ange to - only a few weeks before she died - to see if they needed a consulting make-up artist (mainly for brides, bridal parties, makeovers etc.) Turned out she LOVED the place, they needed someone like her, & she was looking forward to a great working relationship with them. Pity they never actually got a chance to work together in the end
For my birthday this year, my folks bought me a R500 gift voucher for the same salon. For the most part, I'm not much of a beauty / hair salon kinda girl (I prefer doing most of these intimate chores myself, in the privacy of my own home). But after last night I've decided I definitely want to use the voucher on a series of much-needed pedicures during the upcoming summer months. There's nothing worse than crusty winter feet in sexy summery shoes, I'm sure you'll all agree! And if there's one part of my body I just LOVE having pampered & massaged, it's my feet! Not sure why, but it lulls me into a weird, gormless, trance-like state
At the moment at work, I'm hectically researching & preparing a massive proposal presentation for Unilever. Cindy & our assistant publisher are flying down to Durbs in 2 weeks time to present to client direct. If all goes well, & they agree to include some / all of our general interest titles on their magazine schedule, it'll mean BIG advertising revenue for us. Here's holding thumbs...
Speaking of mags, I was devastated to read in a newsletter a few minutes ago that Caxton Magazines (the publishing house I used to work for) announced yesterday that the iconic Style will be closed in the new year - the December 2006 issue will be its last . Caxton justified its reasons for closing down the publication in a terse statement, as follows: "While still popular, smaller niche titles, like Style, are not part of our new publishing strategy." The introduction of a number of mass market titles are planned, the first of which will be a local version of Cleo - a highly successful Australian-based young women's magazine - which should launch in the first half of next year.
Why I am so upset by the closing of Style is the fact that this is one of THE print titles I was hoping to write for. I have always had great respect for their top-notch editorial style (all local journalists), nuggets of invaluable information (where to eat, where to shop, etc), & gorgeous fashion spreads. One of my old mates from primary school days, Richard Keppel-Smith, is one of their favoured photographers. [He, Lee & I actually once stole a car together !!!!! Oh, & he also dated my mate, cinderkill, for a while, way back in the early 90s].
Caxton Magazines' publisher, Denise Stamm (a rather eccentric old lady I used to work quite closely with on market research at one stage), says Style's existing staff will be redeployed elsewhere in the company. The editor of Style, Naomi Larkin (previously editor of Tatler in Singapore), will stay on to assist with the launch of Cleo.
Oh, well, who knows...maybe I'll end up writing for this new Aussie-flavoured glossy, &/or some of these other proposed new titles instead
Below is a pic I've just found - in the same newsletter, BTW - of me & my sweetheart (not wearing his pinstripe jacket ) at the recent annual fundraising event for various children's charities I was telling you lot about, where members of the advertising & marketing industry were challenged to embrace [our] alter egos with a 'P' party theme...
