Last night was quite an experience. No less than 45,000 people rocked up to support, amongst others, Metallica - at Supersport Park cricket grounds in Centurion - halfway between Jo'burg & Pretoria.
I have honestly never seen anything quite like it. I mean, the last time we saw them play was in Earl's Court, London, in late '96, & for some reason it didn't feel half as massive & overwhelming as this. Perhaps it had something to do with this performance being in an airy outdoor space under clear African skies as opposed to an indoor smoky one in the heart of a concrete jungle...? Also, with very little effort in London, Lee & managed to weasel our way right to the front - two or three rows away from their guitar-shaped stage. But last night we were miles back. And not for love or money could we have gotten closer than where we were, around 50m from the stage. Even from that distance, however, the show was really quite something to behold. I doubt they've played to an audience this big (not to mention STARVED - for great international acts), in many, many moons.
The only shit thing was the fact that there was practically no cellphone coverage at all within the grounds, or in the streets directly outside. So all the people I was supposed to hook up with at some point during the evening to say 'hi', I unfortunately just didn't get a chance to see. Most frustrating
Also, the bar situation was abysmal (I ended up getting stoned with Tarryn on an excellently potent mix of Swazi & hydroponic weed instead ) & the toilets were, well, I can't even find the words to describe their state of affairs
Below are some pix Lee took of me sitting like a real "skollie" on the pavement outside, trying desperately to get in touch with my mates buried in the writhing human mass inside...
And my beautiful Montoya drove really well - if not terribly spectacularly - to finish a tidy 4th in the Malaysian GP this morning.
So all in all, an awesome weekend
