Just to let all you lazy Jo'burgers out there know that Standard Bank Gallery has extended its run of "Picasso & Africa" by 1 week due to the enormous public interest in the exhibition.
It will now close in Jo'burg on Sat 25th March before it relocates to Cape Town to open at the Iziko South African National Gallery on Thurs 13th April - the day before the Easter weekend.
The exhibition features 84 works by Picasso & 29 classical African sculptures from SA collections similar to those that the artist collected.
Since its opening on 10th Feb, over 30,000 visitors have already visited the exhibition. This is quite a feat for traditionally apathetic South Africans. So if you haven't yet made the effort to take an hour out of your day to expand your cultural horizons, I seriously suggest you get off your little butts & do so. Best of all - the whole experience is FREE!!!!!
Anyway, on another note, I am personally particularly fond of Picasso's "Blue Period", but came across two works at this exhibition that I just fell in love with. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take any photographs of our own inside the gallery, so the only pix I could post are these crappy, low res ones I found online...
Oil Painting: "Reclining Woman", 1932 (National Museum of Modern Art, Paris)
Sculpture: "Head of a Woman", 1929 - 1930 (Picasso Museum, Paris)
As with all art, flat 2D photographs just don't come near to doing either piece any justice, but I s'pose they're better than nothing
The bottom line is: Go see the exhibition for yourselves!! I promise you won't regret it, & who knows - you may even be INSPIRED
