Our universe is nothing more than a vast experiment. There is a Divine Impetus that designed it and brought it in to being, that much is clear as it seems impossible that something would come from nothing. If you consider how common carbon is and you consider the fact that water is one of the most common compounds in the universe and is held by most schools of scientific thought to be the essential element around which life revolves, it seems clear that the occurance of evolution of life is not so much a miracle of chance as an eventuality that cannot be avoided. So we find ourselves with a universe that is essentially a system that has its own rules and properties, and these elements that cause this system to spawn its own sentient denizens. The universe is self-appreciating art. And we humans and other lifeforms who exist here in the universe are not some special portion of reality that is coddled and guarded by a benevolent deity, no not at all. We are simply an expected part of the system created by the Divine Impetus and nothing we touch is sacred or special. At the core of all human religions, there is this subjective belief that humans are something truly special and that we hold some special destiny that the divinities are greatly concerned about. At the core of these religions, a lie.

I think people would just find some other reason to kill one another. There are already lots of other excuses to choose from for those so inclined. Religion just sounds more civilised to certain fools.
