OLD SCHOOL
what the fuck is "old school"?
why the hell didn't you just ask?
So listen... something comes along. the first thing, the thing which creates an entirely new type of media. call it an archetype.
so ok, it was new and now it's inspired others to make a similar thing. Call that a genre.
eventually core movements evolve from within a genre. a generation or iteration of similarly styled artists. we can call this a "school" of thought.
if you see a divide ... a "generation gap" in influences and styles withing a genre, you may have a "new school" developing. the most prolific or at least the commercially successful of these will become "mainstream" anyway and get played on MTV to no end, but eventually a group will emerge with new ideas and will become "new school"
oh, unless only a few deviate from the mainstream, and they care little for commercial success, we'll probably call them "underground"... but to thell the truth, if they were to grow in number and gain popularity as the majority of acts deviating from the "mainstream" then yes ... they would become the "new school".
So "old school" is (or at least capures) what the first thing was.
so for example, if RUN DMC was an "original" rap act, if you could say they shaped what hip-hop IS at its core, then they are the OLD SCHOOL. I suppose then that "gansta rap" is probably an example of a "new school". Bullocks that. anyway, a hip-hop/rap act that captures the essence of RUN DMC, would be considered "old school"
old school never dies, as everything it spawns in some small way retains the flavor of the original. You can find Old School and New School at the same time. new school does NOT obselete Old School the way you kicked your grandpa out tha' house 'cause his dentures gross out all your fine ass bitches.
me? I'm old school in my own way. I do and think things they way i did a long ass time ago. Things were better when i was a kid.

so you're saying all those kids who say 50 cent (circa 2001) isn't "old school?" HAHAHA nothing beats being at a Greenday show and when they begin to play longview seeing every single yougin' stare in amazement and hear one say to their friend "this must be off the new album coming out!" Keep in mind this is on the American Idiot tour...I think I threw up in my mouth a little when I heard that!
