I slept much better last night. I did three things differently yesterday, all of which might have contributed. Yesterday was a full week since starting the new allergy medication. Although I did have one extremely vivid dream, it was not so disruptive and did not wake me in the night. It could be that my body has adjusted to the medication. I also was unable to take a nap yesterday afternoon since we had intermittent power outages from around 1pm until about 6pm related to intense heat and an overloaded power grid. I have a security alarm and everytime the power is disrupted, it makes several loud beeps until a code is entered to reset the system. The power was basically blinking on and off every 20 minutes due to the heat so napping was impossible. The other change in my routine, and this is a really 'well duh!' sort of moment: I discontinued my caffeine intake about 3 hours before trying to sleep. I have a serious caffeine addiction; I used to wake up to drink coffee so that I could go back to sleep. Perhaps that has changed somewhat as I've gotten a bit older. I plan to replace the bedtime cup of coffee with a cup of decaf tea.
