So the other week my housemate and I completed the 70.3 UK Ironman.
It was my second and Grants first.
We started running back in November when it was still dark, wet, cold and windy. As the time passed the distances we could cover grew from a few hundred yards to a few miles.
February saw the two of us heading out on the road, myself fashioning an outfit a poor tramp would be embarrassed of. Grant showing a fetish for exposing himself in lycra that would would only get worse with time and shopping.
After swimming in the pool for many months we got out to the open water in the form of weedy lakes where a surprisingly large number of people pitch up at six o'clock on sunday mornings. Though its a hell of a sexy time that early with all the rubber of wet-suites and the fit girls jumping in.
Me
Grant
Arriving at the Ironman the day before we scared ourselves shitless by taking a look at the lake with the buoys set-out and driving the full route of the hilly bike course. last year the lake was mostly covered in fog, ignorance truly is bliss and the bike was a hilly course but hell there just isn't a flat bit anywhere!
On the day of the race we awoke at four to eat, drive and get ready. The weather was clear though the race was postponed an hour so the dreaded fog could clear from over the lake. We all waded into the lake grant and I staying together until the sound of the horn. I completed the swim expecting to see Grant flying past me on the bike after the first lap, though no sign of him until my second of the three laps of the run. He was on his first about 400 yards ahead of me, almost all the way until the finish.
We found some videos on youtude some with short clips of us
Its Grant moaning as we all walk over the grit on the path.
If you can see us its a miracle though we pass at 21 seconds.
One of the start.
And a pic of the both of us after completing.
I completed in 6 hours 37min cutting 13 minutes of last year.
Grant a very respectable first time of a little over seven hours.
