names have been changed to protect the innocent/guilty.
i am sitting in my hotel room in a tropical paradise. its my last day in maui, and i was blessed with a fucking ear infection. thats fun!! ive had an amazing trip, but now i am more than ready to be home. i havent smoked pot since monday the 9th. that is the longest i have gone without smoking in years, literally. i feel allright, but have been having crazy dreams. i probably cant recall them all, so lets get back to the trip. lets see how much of this i can remember:
we left the burbank airport at 9:00 am on sunday the 8th of august. josh, kirsten and i had slept at my house and my mother dropped us off. our friend raime, that is the fourth in our little travel group, got dropped off at the airport at around 5 am and had to wait for us to get there. we had a smooth flight over the pacific ocean and landed in the island of oahu. we had a two hour lay over, so we sat outside the airport and i had my first cigarette of the trip. these cute little girls came and got kirstens autograph, and didnt even recognize her boyfriend josh, who was also in the movie they were speaking of. we got a hot dog and got back on the plane for our 20 min. island hopping flight to maui. the shortest flight of my life was the scariest. it was very rough and i was soo excited when we landed safe in maui.
once we got there we found our luggage and went over to the rental car place to pick up our
reserved mid-size sedan to cruise around maui in. when we got there, the lady asked if we wanted to upgrade to a red mustang convertible, needless to say, we accepted. so we jumped in, put the top down, and started our journey.
we got to our hotel and were stunned. we had a huge living room, a kitchen, two bathrooms,a long hallway, and a master bedroom. on the bottom floor, with sliding glass doors going out of both sides of the hotel, we could watch the sunrise in the bedroom and the sunset in the living room, or just run 100 yards to the sand and water. awesome.
that night we went to a place called Erik's seafood, which i wasnt impressed with, but it was still ok. then we walked through the small town of lahaina, where we were staying. some guy sold me pot for $25 and ripped me off, i dont even think it was real weed. i ended up not feeling it and throwing the rest away.
monday morning, we went to an orientation at our hotel to inform us of the activities that were available on the island. we found out about some awesome shit, and each dropped about $200 on tickets for snorkeling, and a chopper ride. then we got our snorkeling gear and went to a beach up the highway a bit. it was awesome, deep water, and we saw some fish. then we were going up on the west hills of the island to find this cool hiking spot and swinging bridges we had heard about in our travel guide book. we drove around the mountain for soo long and looked for it, we didnt want to go to far, because there was a road back there that we were not supposed to take our rental car on. when we realized we had gone too far, we had driven the entire length of the out of bounds road. we turned around and drove it again. we found the road and had to park at the bottom of this little hill and walk. on the way up the hill there were dried up dead frogs all over the street. one was even in mid jump. we finally got to this hiking place at around 5:30. there was a sign that said CLOSED AT 6 PM the woman that was closing up said it would be fine, as long as we were out by dark. we started on our hike. a few miles in we got to the bridges, which were real scary, suspended, swinging bridges, over rocks and creeks and such. we went over two and were looking for a third. we found a cool little watering hole, that kirsten and i went swimming in, and then we kept walking. i thought we should turn around and that there was no other bridge, but everyone thought there was one more, until we literally came to the end of the trail. the sun had already started to go down and we were four miles into this valley. we started back, and i was just watching our light disappear. i was the only one who was scared, but i think it was enough for all four of us. i did not want to get stuck in a valley in Hawaii where we dont even know anyone or anything, we didnt even have a flashlight, but thanks to a cell phone we had a little light. i was flipping out and ran most of the way. i was very relieved when we finally got to the end, and this older Hawaiian couple was sitting on their front porch. they thought it was really funny to see white people running out of a dark valley using the cell phone illumination as a flashlight. we drove home with the top down looking at the beautiful stars.
on tuesday, we did the road road to hana. we left the hotel at around 6:30 in the morning and set off. first, we stopped at twin falls, a little bit of a hike to this swimming hole and a waterfall, we swam and hung out a minute, then kept driving. the road to hana is 600 hairpin turns and 56 bridges all along the coast and a rain forest, with waterfalls and swimming holes like every other stop. we stopped at pretty much all of them. we went to a place called the garden of eden, but there are no snakes in hawaii what-so-ever. a garden of eden without snakes, sounds like some sort of paradise huh? from this place, we could see the rock that is in the opening scene of Jurassic park. then, we went to a place where volcanic rock had created a little peninsula out on the water, we walked out to the edge and were going to eat lunch (pb & j) out there, but all of a sudden the water got very treacherous and came up on the rocks, it also started raining. we ran back up to the car and put the convertible top up, as soon as we got safe and warm and dry, it stopped raining, apparently the gods didnt want us eating on their rocks. the next place we went to was wainapanapa state park, there was a black sand beach that was very beautiful, but the waves were insane and you could see the undertow could kill you. at this park, there were also caves. one of the caves had a swimming hole inside of it that was freezing cold. kirsten, raime and i went in. it was sooo cold, but very refreshing. after that we found a temple that was at least 500 years old. we werent allowed to go inside but we walked around it. then we got to our final destination, the seven sacred pools. you would think that on the road to hana, our final destination would be hana, but youd be wrong, its the actual road to hana that is the adventure. so, the seven sacred pools are kind of self explanatory, there are seven pools all leading into one another through waterfalls. it was sooo cool. there were a lot of people swimming there, but it wasnt crowded because it was so big. people were jumping off of rock and waterfalls, having a blast. i hurt my knee, but whatever. then we started back home. bought some star fruit from this weird guy on the side of the road, and drove home staring at the stars and yelling bohemian rhapsody and i will survive at the top of our lungs.
wednesday we hung around the hotel for a while and went down into town, then got ready for our chopper ride. i was really scared about getting on a helicopter, but what can ya do? we got in and i was directly in the front seat, next to the pilot. we flew up and around the island. we saw the haleakala crater, which was a huge volcano, but is now dormant. there were soo many waterfalls in the rain forest below the crater, and most of the land has never even been touched by human hands. we saw a few rainbows, but the coolest one of all, was an entire circle. a circular rainbow, what? it was the most beautiful thing ever. the whole time we were up there, tears were flowing down my face and my mouth was wide open. ive never seen anything more amazing. while we were up there, steve our pilot, pointed out PAIA the oldest town on maui, as the hippie capital, we decided to go there for dinner. so when we landed we drove about 10 minutes and found this cute little hippie town. it was a little late and most of the shops were closed so we just grabbed a bite to eat and went to one little gift shop. we saw a sign for a dog sanctuary that rescues stray dogs from around the island and adopts them out for a day, so they can get exercise. it was free, so we said we would come back the next day and get one. we got home, got some beer, and swam a bit before going to bed.
thursday morning, we got up and headed down to PAIA. we found the dog sanctuary and a cute, sweet little pup named KOA. we took him to the beach, and everyone we saw knew him, he seemed like a popular dog about town. we shopped a bit and had some lunch, then took KOA back and headed home to get to sleep. we had a big day ahead of us.
friday morning, we got up at 5:30 and went to the harbor, where we got on a boat and went snorkeling. we went to a little island off the coast, called molokini, no one lives on it because it is too small. it was the result of a volcanic eruption years ago . it was really cool, i saw a lot of fish. there was a water slide off the side of the boat which was very fun. then the boat went to the island of lanai, where we also went snorkeling. the water was really choppy, but it was still really fun, i took a bunch of pics at both places. ooh and on the way to lanai, we saw dolphIns, they were swimming with our boat and jumping around. ive never been that close to a dolphin. the one thing i didnt see that i wanted to was a white tip shark, which wouldnt even bite you if you stuck your hand in its mouth. on the way home, kirsten and i were sitting in the front of the boat with this little girl, who was the cutest thing ever. she kept saying she felt like she was on a roller coaster that she wasnt allowed to be on, but she was on it anyways. she also kept saying we were going over the speed limit. she started singing avril livigne (or however the hell you spell her name) and kirsten and i, even though we cant stand her, couldnt help but appease the little girl and sing with her. i might have had a little help from the cocktails jaime kept getting for me, but it was fun anyways. we got back and went swimming. that is when my ear started acting up. i think i went under the water too deep when we were playing marco polo, or napoleon dynamite, or betty davis, or trogdor the burninator, all of the above. we went into town for a bit and ate sushi. we were trying to go to karaoke, but i ended up running back to hotel to pass out, cause my ear was hurting so bad.
i woke up on sat morning, and my ear was still hurting, but i refused to spend my last day in maui, sitting around the hotel room feeling bad for myself. we all went to lunch at this place that was right next to the hotel called hecocks, josh and kirsten ordered lava flows, which are alcoholic drinks and didnt get carded, so i felt lucky and ordered a mai tai. when they brought our drink, theres were both nonalcoholic, but mine and Raime's werent, it was awesome. then we all went and got massages. my masseuse was chewing gum obnoxiously the whole time,. but other than that, it was a good massage. we came back to hotel and had the genius idea of starting to drink at 4 in the afternoon. we had a bottle and a half of bacardi and four people. we played this drinking game called kings. it was really fun, but when we had finished all of our alcohol by 5 pm, we knew there was a problem, especially since my friend kirsten has only been drunk like 4 times in her life, and was definitely not a binge drinker. she ended up throwing up in a trash can for about an hour, then we got a little worried. she was shaking, and unable to really talk all that clearly. i put her in the bath with all of her clothes on and we sat with her while she threw up in the tub and blacked out over and over again. after about an hour i finally got her out of the water, changed her into some dry clothes and put her in bed. her boyfriend laid down with her, and they both passed out. Raime and i stayed up for a while to make sure neither one of them choked on their own vomit, but i figured she had thrown up enough already, and he wasnt that drunk, so he was allright. Raime and i went outside and met a few of our neighbors who bought some wine coolers and gave some to us. i decided to go bed at around 11, totally sober.
this morning, i got up at 7, and cleaned up the hotel as much i could before everyone else was awake, we then packed our bags and hopped into our mustang sally for the last time. we got to the airport and made it to our gate just in time. now i am sitting on the plane watching some ridiculous movie, and i will be home in about 2 hours. i am soo excited to sleep in my own bed tonight, but i had an amazing time on my trip to maui, Hawaii.
