So much of what I used to remember and cherish has faded into the void.
My memory has never been that good, or at least not for as long as I remember....
*cough*
almost definately heavy drug use when younger and prolonged alchohol use in my twenties contributed to that.
But I have a feeling that everyone forgets. Your life shifts, your direction changes, and you mysteriously fail to think of something or someone who had figured quite large for a while.
That feeling of suddenly remembering something which you had no idea you'd even forgot is unsettling. It also makes you question where you are, but not in a particularly measured and even handed way, but in an emotive and disproportionate manner. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and so is the idea that you once had something which now you've lost forever...

Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.
Where he talks about being able to see into the past, but never being able to revisit it. I do understand what you mean to a certain extent - that feeling of loss. However, perhaps you now feel as if you've lost something you once had, as opposed to gained something that you didn't have before, because you feel unsettled or discontented with your present state.
Know what I mean?
Silverwolf is right - go make new memories
