This is my first blog post in an extremely long time and I have serious doubts as to whether or not anyone will read this but it doesn't matter. This blog will from now on take the place of my own personal journal.
The other day, I was on facebook and I saw a strangely ironic post that I see quite often. It said, "I don't care." Normally, I just ignore these posts and move on down the list to see what funny cat pictures facebook has to offer me today but for some reason I decided to ask the question that always comes to mind when I see these posts. "If you don't care, why mention it?"
As I suspected, the poster in question was butt hurt over something that happened previously in the day. That's where the strange irony comes in. If they really didn't care, they wouldn't be upset. Had I not been drinking, I may have used better judgement but since I had been drinking I decided to point out this irony to them.
Of course, they got defensive and started unloading a rather large amount of poorly spelled insults at me. Apparently, they had been drinking as well. But anyways, of these insults, the one I found most interesting was that according to them, I have never had an original thought in my life. It got me thinking as to whether or not I or anyone has ever really had an original thought in their lives.
It seems as if every "new" idea is really just an old idea that has been modified or is being presented in a different way. One big example in the music world is metal which comes from rock which comes from blues which comes from jazz which comes from ragtime and so on and so forth. Other examples include Ed Hardy which clearly rips off Sailor Jerry who was influenced by a combination of old Asian art such as the Ukiyo-e wooden paintings of Japan and vintage American pin-up. I guess there is also a fairly strong pop art influence that can be found in Ed Hardy art as well.
I now wonder if the blank slate theory also applies to our imaginations as well. Do we really imagine new things or just mix and match things we've seen, heard or read before in our pasts? Are our imaginations really limited to just a re-envisionment of what is already there? Is anything really original?
