...with some handshake drugs I got down town...
So WILCO would sometimes record at a studio in Chicago that my friends owned, if they couldn't get into CRC or needed a big room etc.
Well one night the called and we were working in back, and only one engineer was around, (we always worked without adult supervision, because of our relationship with the owners). So the engineer (I'll spare his name as not to embarrass). Well he goes over to the otherside of the place and gets set up and waits for them to get there. Now we always worked late at this time of our lives, so it was round about midnight.
We spent the night blissfully unaware of what was happening on the other side, we would occasionally run into, Jay, or Jeff in the kitchen getting coffee or maybe watch a few minutes of TV with someone. What we didn't know until the next day was that they had smoked the engineer into a coma, and when the owner got in he was asleep in the back of the control room WILCO was gone and so was a very nice microphone. Now that ain't the point all bands borrow things, shit my band would borrow anything that wasn't nailed down. The point is WILCO single handedly made it a punishable offense for any engineer to smoke while on a session. Well except for JM but that is a total different story.
