DEMO REPORT: NO MANDATE FOR WAR
The March 20th '05 Peace Demonstration today on Boston Common was a huge success. A wide variety of performers and speakers, musicians and poets took the bandstand for a diverse crowd of thousands!
Some standouts this day included Cedric Josey opening with his sweet acoustic song, concious Rap by MC Kabir, a rousing historical, socialist, and revolutionary extortion to organise and understand ourselves (the People of the World) as the true Superpower, by Black Arts Movement poet Askia Toure! And there was a truely wonderful surprise appearence...
R ight after we (Amatul and NateBox) got done performing, who should come walking in past the long rows of coffins draped in American flags and black cloth but... !!Howard Zinn!!, who gave a rousing speech on how War IS Terrorism. He was recieved by crowds of young people and indi press like a rockstar.
Then we were stunned by original poetry, dance, and song by the ladies of Reflect and Strengthen, fiery political punkrock by Dave Tree's new band SuperPower, some original and political Reggae by Toussant, and the closing speech by Boston city counceller Chuck Turner.
After the rally was over, Chuck Turner and Eve from Boston Mobalization actually marched through Downtown Crossing with a collection of radical and anarchist youth. When Boston Police clashed with the youth at the very end of their march, Emily from Boston MOBE, myself and Nate, Chuck Turner and Eve stayed at the Police station with the friends and family of the 5 arrested until every last one was released without charges to their family members, or charged and released.
Notibly, the legal observers from the Lawyers Guild and the ABC (Anarchist Black Cross) stayed with us at the Police station. They payed all bails in full with their own funds, and money raised from quick collections in the crowd of marchers. Only one of the youth arrested seemed to be hurt by the police... we felt that considering the thousands who attended the peaceful rally and the Anarchist's march, we made out very well indeed.
!PEACE!
