Ten songs that make my day when I hear them.
"I wanna little sugar in my bowl" - Nina Simone
This song is so damn sexy, that I can't go a week without hearing it.
"I'm Your Man" - Leonard Cohen
Much like the song above, this sultry song is one of my all time favorites.
"Heroin Girl" - Everclear
Say what you want about the band and how they ended up. This was THE BEST major label song of 1995.
"Labor Day" - Goodness
I've always had a crush on Carrie Akre, this heartbreak song always makes me a little goofy when I hear it.
"Space" - Mira
Small shoegazer band from Florida, "Space" really took me by suprise, it was like hearing the best parts of the Cure and the best parts of the Sundays all together, and it worked.
"66"- Afghan Whigs
alright by now you've figured out that I have a thing for sultry songs. This one just oozes sexuality, to me.
"Need you Around"- Smoking Popes
1995 was a damn good year for Capitol Records. Everclear and Smoking Popes released great albums. Need you Around is my prefect pop song, an addictive progression, clean hooks, and just enough self depreciation to not be bubblegum pop. If you're not familiar with them, think XTC.
"Dirty Boots" - Sonic Youth
Now I realize Sonic Youth has too many songs to imply this is one of their best, however I have wonderful memories of this song. It reminds me of the best parts of highschool, and the beginning of my career as a music snob.
"August Rain" - This Ascension
An all time favorite, I discovered This Ascension as a Music Director for a commercial Alt. radio station. I was wanting to make a name for myself and break bands in my market and hopefully earn some industry cred. (But that's another story) When I listened to This Ascension I knew I couldn't put this Darkwave gem on the air, but it had an immediate and prominent home in my personal collection, which lead to my doing small amounts of promotion for them and label mates when ever I could.
August Rain is a beautiful song, btw.
"Older" - They Might be Giants
One of my newest favorite songs, I've got my kids singing it around the house, and that's the part that really makes my day.
