Ok, so the G20.
Fuck. What a mess. It was an inconsequential meeting aimed at maintaining the status quo.
Great idea, really.
"Let's hold it in Pittsburgh. It's medium sized city with an inept police force, god-awful traffic routes, and mayor who still wets himself."
FAIL.
1. When hosting an international conference of world leaders, one of the first concerns should be security. If the city doesn't meet this basic requisite, choose somewhere else. This brings me to point #2.
2. Our police force was so small and either inept or untrained that we had to bring in volunteers from other cities to augment security forces. That's right, volunteer. That means these fucktards actually wanted to come here and fuck with protesters and demonstrators. I don't know any of them personally, but I know the type, and I can guarantee you they enjoy that job. You can probably figure out their motives simply by watching any videos of their interactions with demonstrators (or just ordinary citizens trying to get from point A to B at the "wrong" time).
3. I think Pittsburgh has a pretty healthy community of it's own in regards to political and social activism. They might not always get the attention their respective causes deserve, but they know what they're doing, and why they're doing it (for the most part). We shouldn't have needed the throngs of out-of-towners that showed-up to turn up the volume on the various issues being addressed.
4. Foreign governments, out-of-city/state law enforcement and demonstrators. Most of us were almost scared to go outside in our own cities; It was exactly like living in a police state, and I've never felt that living in this town before. I didn't even feel like this was Pittsburgh. It sucked.
5. My job, just like pretty much everybody else's, was negatively impacted. Shit was closed everywhere, and the places that weren't did practically no business. Whatever amount of money this fucking conference brought in does not balance out the money lost by closed or damaged business or by the amount of money spent bringing in outside security (i.e. who paid for the guardsmen to be on duty? Oh, right...). We wasted a shit-ton of fuel and manpower to move all of our planes to Youngstown, OH (the shittiest town ever), then maintenance and aircrews to sit on alert status there for over a week. Sure, it got me out of town for a few days, but what a fraking waste...

I really didn't understand why they picked Pittsburgh.
