Everynight before I go to bed @ 6am with liquor in my belly I eat a multi vitamin, drink a big glass of water, and lay in bed with either the soundtrack to Edward Scissorhands or Dark City on.
9 times out of ten it will soothe me right to sleep. The 1 time out of 10 that it doesn't ends up being the most disturbing nightmare. I have unrealistic nightmares about once every 6 months. The rest of them are very very possible and realistic.
For instance, I had a dream not too long ago and I walked in on my father attempting to commit suicide and he hadn't died yet. He was holding the gun my grandfather actually used to commit suicide and crying. So, I took the gun and shot myself. So, my father and I were just crying with the family suicide gun on the floor. Bleeding and dying. Just waiting to go.
When I woke up I was pretty shocked I was alive. It seemed so fucking real. It felt very surreal to be alive that day. Those images were stuck in my head for weeks.
