Awesome.
We left toward Hollywood at 7pm on Saturday and got to our hotel at 1am. J somehow convinced Pat and Josh to smoke with us. I can't remember the last time I saw that happen.
The next day, we walked by the Avalon at like 11:30 and there were two girls sitting in front. I said "first ones here!" as we walked by and they just kinda looked at us. Anyway, we wandered around town for 2 hours or so and started to get bored. So we ate some lunch and walked back to the Avalon. The two girls weren't there, so we declared ourselves the first ones there. They came back after a few minutes and I'm glad they did because we woulda been bored out of our minds, but they were pretty damn entertaining. Turns out they got there at 7am.
We were talking about the how the band was probably roaming the streets and just then Claudio walks by and no one really noticed or says anything to him, so I just kinda loudly say 'Hi' and he looks at me and says 'Hello'. He walked back by a little later and the girls who were there in front of us got pictures with him, but I just didn't feel like bothering him.. he looked like he wanted to be left alone.
This really nice lady came up about halfway through our wait and was putting signs up saying that the show would be filmed for a possible DVD! She gave me one of the papers too, heh I'm gonna put it on my wall. We also met a guy who flew here from Atlanta just to see the show. I misunderstood a remark from a security guy and put my camera back in the car, when I later found out that cameras were ok I was too lazy to go back and get it, sucks 'cuz I missed a lot of great shots. After Five and a half hours of sitting outside doors open and I'm the third person In! We run to the front and all get the perfect spot right in the middle.
Coheed and Cambria take the stage at 8pm with the acoustic guitars and the tiny snare/bass/hihat/crash drumset. They played: Time Consumer, Godsend Conspirator, Backend of Forever, A Favor House Atlantic, the Light and the Glass. Halfway through Godsend one of Claudio's strings broke and he just kinda put the guitar down and sang the rest of the song. Then after the song the stage tech started to restring it and Claudio said something like "You might think we would plan ahead and bring an extra guitar." Then he asked if anyone had any questions and some fans raise their hands and he answered the following:
'Can I play drums?' Claudio said: "I dunno, can you? I think we're pretty straight up here."
'Will you marry me?" Claudio said: "No."
"Can I have a hug?" One of the girls who was outside with us asked. Claudio climbed down off the stage and hugged her over the barricade, aww.
'What kind of guitar pic do you use' I asked to which he repied "Whatever they give me."
After they finished Light & Glass they looked around and asked if we wanted them to play anything else. Pat and I yelled "Play the Trooper!" and Travis said he didn't know how, Claudio showed him and Mic and they played the first half of the song.
Twenty minute break and then the band comes back out and Claudio says "This is the part where we rock." They played an unbelievable electric set: Welcome Home(new song), Blood Red Summer, Devil In Jersey City, Everything Evil, Three Evils, A Favor House Atlantic, The Crowing, Al the Killer, Neverender, Junesong Provision, 2113(!!!). For the encore they played In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth and Final Cut(new song with 5 minutes of guitar solos, including Claudio soloing with his teeth and behind his head). So fucking great.
On the way back Pat got a speeding ticket for 100mph in a 65, and he was so stressed out that he took the wrong highway. Everyone fell asleep between Bakersfield and Delano and I had to drive home half asleep from 3am-8am. Awesomeness!
Overall, fucking awesome weekend.
