o my god. So I've been studying Quenya again (aka elvish), as everybody has probably noticed from my new avatar picture and the nonsense I've been posting.
I'm on this other site too called The Council of Elrond which is great if you're a super-duper tolkein geek like me, but I've been having culture shock!
It's sort of like livejournal where the median aga is 15. I just got assigned a Quenya study budy who's a sophmore in high school. Plus she's "read" up through lesson 2 (nouns) and I just finished lesson 10. (passive participle) . The site is great they have these workbook things where someone actually comes through and corrects your elvish homework. [I think they'll be surprised when they figure out that I did eight lessons today...]
The other thing about this site is that there are CHRISTIANS. lots of them. the loud and evangelistic-oid kind. I don't care if you're christian- or not. The problem is there's lots of christains out there who really care if YOU are christian or not. (and even more if you're gay or not.)
At least the site rules say that you'll be kicked off if you make homophobic coments or evangelize.
There was even a thread in the forums for things people wanted other people to pray for, and one person requested prayers for the conversion of the actor who played commodor norrington in Pirates of the Carribean. Holy crap! You could write that after someone else just requested prayers for someone in semi-critical condition after a car crash?
so weird.
like I said culture shock.
However- it's a cool site despite those things. It's free and there's a ton of resourses. (damn I will never learn how that word is spelt. fuck it I should just make up a new word for that. res. okay. resources whatver will now be spelt res, just don't confuse it with The Rez. that's different.
Well. my 15 year old study budy likes Queen a lot. so she's either not homophobic or very naive. I'm not sure if she's actually interested in the study part of study budy. I may have just aquired a teen age pen friend.

I didn't read any Tolkien until a few months before the first movie in the trilogy came out. Only because another fantasy crazy friend of mine insisted I read the story before I see the movie's interpretation.
Which is a good thing. I feel personally, that a certain magic was lost in Tom Bombadil not appearing. I know there was an apparent homage in the 3rd part, but it wasn't a replacement.
If you want my personal tastes defined in a single made up world and series it's Frank Herbert's Dune series.

I wonder if the Christian element finds something of an ideal in the Elven civilisation. Everything is clean and pretty and magical, and everybody is beautiful and the lion sleeps next to the lamb and stuff like that.
I once discussed with a friend that the elves in certain worlds act almost like an Aryan super race and it would be interesting to see a movie or book that portrayed the elves as Nazis who really were smarter, prettier and better than the humans they wanted to...um..'cleanse ethnically'.
by the way, i'm not attacking or putting down anything you love about Tolkien or elves....I'm just rambling....
Thanks so much for a great time last night and reminding me that i am only as old as i feel, and that if i could dance (without someone losing an eye or lauhging themselves into a coma) I COULD dance. It is always a pleasure hanging with the bad-assed tall girl with the killer sense of self, who although she can handle herself properly, she still allows me to be a rude jerk and run off the pesky long haired lameness plague.
As for learning Quenya, I think it is stellar that you are doing so. I mean, what if the world suffers a horrible event such as high radiation levels killing folks off or a meteor hits and the population is cut 80%. The remaining 20% all knew Quenya, and repopulated the earth making it the main language. Then Aliens arrive and speak highly of how beautiful our language is and decide to fix up the world for us. God forbid aliens arrive and we are still speaking english.....we would look like retards..."Yo alien dude, whats up? Hows it hanging? ect." It could happen, and we are lucky to be represented by peeps like you.
Ah well, i can dream, i think i like the 80% thing the best tho...
Much love to you and yours,
