So I'm on holiday at last, yay!!!
Arrived in beautiful Italy last night and its been none stop drama since... which has unfortunately ruined things for me a little bit :(
We went for our dinner in the hotel last night and whilst eating heard a huge crash from below the terrace, I looked down and people were stood screaming and crying at the side of the road and people were attempting (and failing) to stop the traffic. I suggested to my mum who's a nurse that we should go help but she was worried that she wouldn't be able to help because she can't speak Italian, this pissed me off tbh! So I stormed off and she followed.
When I got down there, oh my days, utter carnage! Three men had been launched across the road, mum started assessing who needed the most help, she left me with a Brazilian man who was bleeding from his head.. a lot!! I had him in the recovery position but he began to get restless because his wife wasn't close by and an Italian woman kept touching him and praying for him, so he ended up laying on his stomach which really affected his breathing! I was begging people to help me move him back and I was just being ignored whilst people took photos!!
In the end his wife came and sat with him, I think she was in major shock before so that's why she wasn't by his side, remarkably she only had a bump on her head and a scuff on her knee! I left the man with his wife who helped me move him on his side again and ran to my mum who was with the most seriously ill patient, a young boy, around 15 years old? He wasn't breathing at all and mum was trying to do cpr on him, we got him back but his breathing was so faint, it's giving me chills thinking about his poor little face whilst I sat there stroking his hand :(
After over 20 minutes an ambulance finally appeared, still no police! There was just mum, me, a Welsh policeman and a french man helping and it took mum and I awhile to go down and help so these poor guys were alone in the road for so long! So yeah the ambulance appears and drives straight past the young boy who was in a serious way so I ran after it and started banging on his door and tried to explain he wasn't breathing... they finally and reluctantly took notice of me and came over to him. PULLED his helmet off and flung him on a stretcher... all whilst his breathing had STOPPED again. I have never seen such negligent treatment in my entire life. They treated all of the patients like corpses.
Basically the reason I'm so distressed and have attempted to cobble together this poorly written item is because... WHAT THE FUCK are the Italian paramedics about, screaming at each other and us and giving no care or consideration to their patients AND why was none of the 60+ by standers NOT HELPING. What a vile world we live in. I have no medical training but I held peoples hands, soothed them and supported their heads, not took photos or just watched for some excitement! I couldn't sleep last night, not because I was troubled by seeing critically ill people, but because I was devastated by the shoddy treatment they received!
Im so sorry this makes no sense at all, I just needed to hammer my keyboard. Im aware I'm completely illiterate as well :/
Please even if the sight of blood makes you ill, just try and give comfort to those around you if you ever see anything like this. The young boy who's hand I held had no idea I was there but I'd like to think if I was laying in the middle of a road barely breathing someone would be there to hold my hand too!
Please take care guys,
peace and love <3
