Today, I got to go out in the field, and do an actual assignment (meaning that the results of my work today will be used as real census data, not just a measure of how well I'm doing in training).

So I went out to the general area I would be working in, met up with my crew leader in the parking lot of a nearby shopping center that I already knew how to get to, and we went out together for about half an hour before he decided that I appeared to have a good enough grasp on what I was doing to be left out there on my own. I confirmed 25 addresses on the list, updated errors on two others, and added four whole buildings that weren't on the list. For a total of 83 addresses canvassed today (counting each individual unit of the multi-unit housing structures).

And no, I can't be any more specific about the details, because federal law forbids me to divulge any specific census data.

But that completed the assignment block. Of which I had two in the assignment area today, and I would have done the second as well, had the rain not been an issue for the electronic hardware required to do the job.

So, we've all got tomorrow off, for the occasion of Zombie Jesus Bunny Day, and then on Monday I get to go back and canvass the other assignment block.

I'm a productive member of society again. It feels nice.

Meanwhile, I've been having some fun at the expense of one of my friends (who hasn't been in touch with me lately), and I figured I'd share the AIM transcript from a couple nights ago with you all.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Me: Meanwhlie, while you haven't been looking, I've become an agent of the federal government.
Me: They've been training me how to not share any information with other agencies.
Me: But how to get all the info I need out of civilians.
Me: It's fun.
Me: I had to get fingerprinted just for security clearance to use the TIMECLOCK, let alone the files.
Him: Interesting. What agency?
Me: A division of the Department of Commerce.
Me: Next week, when my training is complete, I'll be out in the field, setting up the prepwork for a major operation next year.
Him: Congrats.
Him: How'd you manage to get this gig?
Me: Honestly, I drove my mother to work one day, and struck up a conversation with a stranger in the lobby of the library.
Him: ...you got recruited by a random stranger?
Me: I impressed him. Twenty seven right answers on the qualification test routine. Out of twenty eight questions.
Me: They gave me my own portable computer with its own cellphone hardware, so that I can be given directions in the field by my team leader, without needing to go in person to the local office.
Him: ...
Him: Jesus christ, man. WTF do you do for these people?
Me: I'm not allowed to discuss details of my assignments.
Me: There were eight separate forms I had to sign to that effect.
Me: Including the one that said I understood that if the police want to look at the contents of my portable computer, I'm withholden by federal law not to disclose anything.
Me: However, I can tell you that so far, I've just been in training.
Me: I'm scheduled to go out into the field on Saturday.
Him: Damn, man. This sounds awesome.
Him: You finally caught a break and get in on a good job.
Me: I should get my first fieldwork assignment sometime tomorrow.
Me: ...to be completed on Saturday, obviously.
Me: Oh, and the job pays almost twice what Home Depot was offering per hour.
Me: Not to mention that the minimum hours per week at this job are just slightly less than the maximum per week at Home Depot.
Him: 37.5?
Me: Home Depot was only hiring part-timers.
Him: Ah ha
Him: Well. You're a Company man now.
Me: I believe they prefer Bureau.
Me: However, it's now 10:30pm. Time to go to bed. The only down side to this job is having to get up at 6:30am to make it to training on time.

And the amazing thing is that everything I said was true. I just kept enough of the details vague enough to let him jump to all the wrong conclusions. So much fun. ::grins::
