I've had this sort of superheroish idea (that I call "Princes") bouncing around my head for the past couple days, and I just realized why it didn't seem to fit into any of my usual genres. It should be an anime (or manga).
The basic premise is of an alternate history near-future setting (like most superhero stories) in which a particular Great Nation has developed a small number of superhuman operatives which it sends to other nations as agents provocateur (pretty sure I spelled that wrong, but who cares). And the operational command responsible for the superpowered operatives likes to use the same cover identity for each of them - the son/daughter of the Great Nation's ambassador to wherever the operative is stationed.
Then, much like the Soviet Union did (I've been reading Sergei Lukyanenko's "Night Watch" series lately), the Great Nation falls apart into several disparate nations, and suddenly the Princes aren't all on the same side anymore.
So, the first chapter of the series would start with one of the Princes as a private contractor working a job, and using his superpowers to overcome the various obstacles with ease. But at the end of the chapter, he comes face to face with another Prince, who's still working for the government (of one of the splinter nations) that the protagonist is trying to steal from. And chapter two would open with a flashback to the two of them working together on a mission a year ago.
That sort of thing.
