I do appologise for not having writen in such a long time. The show was Wonderful! Anyone who has a chance to see the girls live should do so.
With finals last week and Christmas being next week, I have been super busy between school and work. At least I have had something to look forward to; I am going to be able to have a few days off to go home and see my family.
For one reason or another, some people are put off by the holidays. I find them to be a super important idea though. Sure it is really fun when you give something to someone special on an ordinary occasion, and sure it almost feels obligatory to do so around Christmas. Of coarse it is wonderful to see you family anytime of the year, and sure it may even be better than on Christmas or thanksgiving, but I feel that these "obligations" are a good idea. Because of Christmas and thanksgiving, society is able to recognise a break from the hetic everyday life. Without an excuse to take a day off and enjoy your family, it may be impossible to observe such an occasion. It is not practicle to the advancment of society for everyone to gather the family everyday and spend the whole day together making turkey and fudge and all the other holiday treats. For this reason, I feel that the opportunity afforded by recognised holidays is an important one! It is like society is like, "Okay Alleta, you may take a break now." And I am like, "Wow, a break! I think I have time to sit down and write to everyone then."
Yep. So Bah Humbug to you scredges, but i love the holidays.
I am not home this year for christmas. Here are a few of the things I am missing:
Fudge! My father's family was not very well off financially growing up. For christmas, instead of buying everyone gifts my grandmother would make all sorts of holiday candies and give them as gifts. After she died my father and his siblings created a tradition where each one of them takes one of grandma's recipies and makes enough to send to eachother. This way they all end up with a little bit of everything without haveing to make it all themselves. I think it is a wonderful way to remember our grandmother. It makes everyone work together to create a feeling of being together on christmas. You see, all of my aunts and uncles (his siblings) are spread out across the states and do not get to come together often. Fudge. Fudge has a greater meaning to me than just the chocolatey goodness that I also enjoy!
The lights. This is somthing my mother likes to do. It is not so much fun being out in the cold trying to untangle the lights. Also, we have sooo many. I think we buy new ones every year to avoid having to untangle the old ones. It is nice though to drive home from where ever and know from the street that someone is home. I don't like being alone and when i see the lights from the street, I know there is someone there to welcome me.
The tree. We always get a real tree. Always. Yeah, there are leaves everywhere. But it smells so good. When we are done with the tree, we take it out into the yard and leave it for the New Years Bon-Fire. I love vaccuming up the trees fallen leaves. for some reason it makes the smell even stronger.
My family. My mother gets so cheery even between the bouts of stress that accompanies the christmas cards and gifts that must make it out by a certain time. She will be up early (for me that is anytime before noon) and start playing christmas music to wake everyone up. then it is like "hey you're up! Wanna help wrap things?" Silly mommy. Sure I do. Really, i do, but you gotta play it off, you know. I cannot come off as the sap that I know everyone knows that I am. So I moan and Groan about how she woke me and then get to wrapping gifts.
My Daddy gets all excited about making fudge and carmels and Mom makes the peanut brittle. I help out by taste-testing everything . My sisters and I each take part in this . We even share what we can with the dogs! No fudge for them though. They are funny to watch when they try to eat peanut brittle. They get their share of the fried turkey and ham too. They wear their little sweaters and we take pictures. They are fairly good sports about the whole thing. I miss my puppy soo much.
Well. that is enough for now. Later! Leave some comments about your favorite holiday traditions.
