From the time when I was a young child, my grandmother (Sittie in Arabic) has always been my closest connection I've had to my father. I recall many times when she would sing to me, sometimes I loathed it and then there were times she would sing a weird tune to me that I delighted in. One day, I finally got to see the Blues Brothers movie and learned that the tune was for real, this strange song about a slutty girl from the 50s did exist and my Sittie was not nearly as insane as I'd thought. Ever since then, this Cab Calloway tune has been in my music collection somehow.
The highlight of my first day in Austin was this evening as I drove Sittie back to her place. I had my Ipod plugged into my aunt's fancy hybrid when shuffle decided it was time to get this 94 year old woman into the groove. The horns came on, the crowd roared and my grandmother got a giant grin on her face. She started singing and took my hand as we drove down the Capital of Texas freeway, I was unable to stop giggling at the sight of her enjoying my music. I have thought of her every time I heard this song, and this will be a memory I wont forget. I don't know how many more chances I will get to make memories with her, but this made my trip worth the hassle.
